I am into teaching from the last 3 years. I am handling students who are really hard up with vocabullary. Apart from paucity of words, they lack self confidence and even shirk the clases when asked to make any presentation.
In the very initial year of my teaching career in 2005, I came across the students of MBA. It being my first job, I faced many intricacies. Some students were elder to me while the others were of my age. When I entered the class the class the first day, students took me to be a fresh admission and someone asked me to sit by his side. Anyhow, I went to the teacher's table and briefed about me as their English teacher and soft skills & personality developer. After that there was an appropriate atmosphere of teaching as when you open your mouth, such students gape at you with astonishment. Never did I try to dominate my students as their superior rather I always remained as a friend of theirs assisting and facilitating them.
To grasp their attention and divert them towards learning, I involved my students in many interesting activities where they found an atmosphere of learning with enjoyment.
Bringing the students out of their cacoons was. too, not an easy task. Initially they used to avert making eye contacts with me else I will ask them to speak. I had to boost their confidence by beginning with general talks. By and by, they came to the level of standing in front of the class.
Then came the task of providing them with vocabullary. For that I used short story books, funny passages, jokes, skits, consulting dictionary etc. It was made a compulsion for them to write (daily) at least 25 words with their meanings and usage. Within a month they had enogh words with them to chat with their friends and professors. At least they had enough words now to talk about their routine life. Thereafter, I brought them to listenng to news, reading newspapers and magazines. They were given assignments (in groups) to summarize news articles and other such topics to bring them to the level of professional studies.
Daily listening, speaing, reading and writing enhanced their proficiency. Although it was a strenuous task but after bringing them to a specific level, I took a sigh of relief that now they are ready to enter into the corporate world.
