I meet each of my classes two days in a week. I'm sure most of them don't encounter with English in remaining five days. I've tried to find solutions to that problem, and I should say; giving homework isn't a solution. I have to find other ways to reach them.
We know especially young people really fond of their cell phones. That fact brought me to the idea "SMS Word". Once a week, I send a word from the next unit of the course book. For example, we have classes on Saturday and Sunday, I send them text messages every Wednesday evening. I give the meaning of the word, add pronunciation and I use the word in a sentence.
Before starting the project I asked all the students one by one if they want to receive these messages and I told them they can unsubscribe whenever they want.
Here's the result: it's been more than 2 months since I started the project. The students are very glad and noone wanted to unsubscribe. When I'm late they ask me "Where is our message?" After sending the messages I ask in my first lesson "What was the message of the week?", "What was the meaning?". The result is amazing! They even remember the sentence with every single word.
I want to hear your comments. My next step is preparing and sending MMS using pictures, so do you have any suggestions? How can we improve SMS Word project?

Nice idea, and you could take it a stage further. Encourage learner autonomy by getting the students to take over the responsibilty from you; a different student each week, for example ...... and I am curious, how do send them the pronunciation?
Hello lisedwards! Thank you very very much for the idea! I'll immediately apply your suggestion. I write the pronunciation in Turkish. Here's an example message; chair (çeyır) means sandalye in English. -The cat is on the chair. (Kedi sandalyenin üstündedir.)
