      Job Hunt

I've been living in South Korea for over half a year now.

It's about time to start looking for a Job.

Without knowing much Korean choices are pretty much limited to teaching English. So I've been doing some research and getting some experience giving private tuition. I don't think I'll ever be ready for the real thing!

Parents in Korea take an extreme interest in their childrens education and the school system alone just dosn't satisfy them. Therefore there are thousands of private acadamies, or Hagwon, for preschoolers and after school classes for elementary to high school level.

These Hagwons specialise in a range of subjects. Usually English and Math, The 2 most important subjects for university entry. Many perants will send there children as young as 4 years old to learn English at a hagwon. So if you want to teach English as a foreign language the Republic of Korea is the place to be.

      ...

I just happen to be here by fate.

Anyway, I have applied for a job at one of these Hagwons. It teaches kindergarden and afterschool for elementary students. There are many dodgy hagwons out there (hagwons are more business institutions than educational) but this one seems well organised and friendly so far. The director dosn't speak much english but he was able to answer my questions however we weren't able to properly negotiate hours and wages.

So far he has offered me

2.1 man won mon - fri... 30hours a week but starting at 9am and finishing at 6pm or 7pm

Those hours just don't add up or I'm due some very long breaks.

I have a baby girl so I'm a bit reluctant to have to leave her in care all day while I teach other children. (unfortunatly they are not offering part time work)

Well we'll see how negotiations go tomorrow.

      Hi tajimanni,

My brother's moving to South Korea in a couple of weeks with his family and was inviting me to come and stay with them because of the demand for english teaching. These hagwons you described will be news to him! He has 2 children one of whom is slightly austistic so its great to know that south korea is "big" on education.

Hope you find a suitable job, I too have children so will wait till they're back at school before committing to a job, no matter how tempting!
