      Learn through the Stomach!

This happened when I was teaching a class of 5th standard in a rural school. I was undergoing my teaching practice in my 7th semester at college. Generally, the children are introduced to English as their second language in their fifth standard in Government schools in India. We had to prepare lesson plans and teaching aids for the class everyday. Once I decided to teach the names of vegetables in English. I didn’t carry a chart; instead I took some vegetables with me to the class. When I was showing them a tomato, a little kid who was sitting in the last bench suddenly stood up in his place. He asked me to come close up to him, so that he could have a clear view of the thing in my hand. I came up very close to him…..and was stunned! He grabbed the tomato from my hands and put into his mouth. He bit it so hard, and relished eating it. Finally, there was a sheepish grin on his face, and the entire class including me burst into peals of laughter. This is a novel way of learning……. learning through your stomach!

      Hi Sureshr

Thanks for sharing this interesting story.

The little kid is really naive, and due to this reaction, I think both he and his classmates will never forget what tomato is!

Nice to read your interesting story. We can call it TPR-total physical response, can't we?
