Thank You for including me. I would like to share my discovery on teaching tenses to ESL pupils who have very little exposure to English. After many methodological styles and attempts, I finally managed to make my elementary level students understand and use the concept of Simple Past Tanse, Simple Present Tense, Present Continuous Tense and Past Continuous Tense effectively.
usually/always/
sometimes/seldom/
often etc.
now /
at this moment etc.
yesterday / last night / just now / etc. at that moment / then etc. Simple Present Present Progressive Simple Past Past Progressive He / She / It ..........s ..... is .......ing
.........ed (or as memorised)
....... was
........ing
They / We ..........(no 's') ...... are .....ing........ed
(or as memorised)
....... were
........ing
After going through the table and its contents, I gave them some pictures and told them to talk about the incidents and happenings and to my surprise, about 70% of the pupils fared well. Hope this helps. If there are any other suggestions, please forward. I would be gald to receive some comments on how to improve this further. Thank you

It seems you managed to lead that class really well.
For the most part, from my experience, teaching things in context and making sure ss understand to context before embarking on the grammar analysis has worked really well.
I try to make sure I cater for my visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. So I draw charts with their conclusions, tell them things including the grammar points orally, ask them to do sth regarding it.
There's a new version of a lovely oldie, which I love "Teaching Grammar Creatively" by Herbert Puchta and Mario Rinvolucri.
You might like it!
