      Palindromes for reading activities

A “palindrome” reads the same backwards as forward. I have learnt this term quite recently. Maybe, you already know this term but I want to share my thoughts how we can use palindromes in the class.

I strongly recommend you to check out the video called Lost Generation. It is a wonderful video and reading material. According to the post here, the video was submitted in a contest titled "u @ 50" by a 20-year old. It won the second place.

I have used this palindrome in my reading class and found it quite useful. First of all, I have introduced a couple of unknown words that students may not know. After, we have written this text on board. (Be careful with the lines as they are crucial for the aim of this lesson). Everyone read one line aloud and we discussed the text and the pessimism of the writer reflected on the text. Students were really harsh on the writer.

Later, I asked them to read starting from the last line and they were shocked! They were amazed and loved it! They started to mention how clever and optimistic the writer was. We had a chance to discuss the terms 'empathy' and 'reverse thinking' thanks to this text. No need to say how entertaining and interesting was the lesson.

How else can you use palindromes in the class?

Here are a couple of them :-)

      Do geese see God?

      Madam, in Eden I'm Adam

Rats live on no evil star

I used to teach the novel Holes by Louis Sachar. Palindromes were rampant in that novel and my students had a lot of fun with them. The main character in the novel was called Stanley Yelnats!

@CoffeeAddict, I will surely check it out! Thanks for giving an example. I love the character's name!

@Elena, your comment is appreciated!! ;)

@Bülent, thank you and I hope your students will love it depending on your way of using them. I learnt it quite recently and hope to use them more :)
