      How to use quotations in the class

      We see and read lots of quotes here and there. How often do we use them in the class? Not often, I guess. But there are many ways that we can integrate them into our teaching. Here are some of them:

      • Mention them when you need to motivate and inspire your students.
      • Use them in the writing class. (Quotes help students think about and write their personal reflections on a specific subject.)
      • Hang motivational quote posters on the wall of the class. {I never forget what we had in our class wall: "to start is the half of successing the work"}
      • Use for dictation.
      • Ask students to find quotes related to the theme of the week you have chosen before.
      • Discuss these quotes, prepare an environment for a hot debate.
      • Use quotes to introduce characters or people. (Students may remember the figures vividly when they hear their quotes first)
      • Prepare fill-in-the-blanks acitivities by using quotes. (Improves grammar, vocabulary + increases motivation)
      • Ask a group of students to translate them into L1, and the other group to translate into English and vice versa.
      • Matching halves of the quotes. (I read this somewhere a while ago and sounds good!)
      • Use to teach synonyms, antonyms, sentence structure, pronunciation etc.
      • Ask students to express the quotes in other ways. (e.g. Using 'unless' if it is made with 'if')

      These are the ones that come to my mind. Are there any others you would like to add? Comments appreciated as usual :)

      Thank you. These are wonderful ideas.

      I sometimes use quotes (especially form the films students like) to give examples for grammar topics. They motivate and concentrate easily when they see the power point slides with these quotes and some scenes from the films.

      They love quotes from the films they like. Sometimes, they know Turkish version of the quote and when they hear it in English, they also get interested automatically.

      Thanks for stopping by!
