They grow up, after some years we meet them in the street, in the bus and the most fulfilling sensation is when they remember us, tell us what´s new, evoke memories from school days... it is then when you realise you did a good job, you left a pleasant feeling in their hearts. My father was a teacher, he is 70 now, and when we meet a pupil of his I see the happy spark in his eyes when they approach him gladly.
Nevertheless, it is not easy to be always "on good terms" with the class. I always say to me it feels like I am Snow White with her dwarfs. And really among all of us there is always someone who is a Sleepy, a Dopey, a Sneezy, a Happy, a Grumpy, a Bashful or a Doc... and all possible variations of them :)
So I believe it is easier for 1 person (the teacher) to adapt to them, then the whole 23 of them to adapt to me. The contrary opinion is that a teacher must manage the classroom in perfect order (!) but actually creating a pleasant working atmosphere means constant balancing, noticing their needs and moods and adapting to them. Lesson plans are always made and carefully planned but easily and necessarily changed if the situation requires. If they are "down" lift their spirit up, if they are too "up" slow it down. That should keep the steady pace of our classroom work. :)
What could be the figure or symbol of your class relationship?
Some pupils could even say for me - Evil Queen :))) or for you - Prince Charming ;)
A friend of mine asked me if I am scared when I enter the classroom and face the students. She says she gets a slight panic attack, like anxiety and "stage fright" when in front of pupils. I don´t feel this way. I regard myself as Snow White - the one who takes care of them, creates pleasant atmosphere, teaches them and maintains order in "our little house". And no matter how different our characters are every time I enter the classroom I have a nice feeling of togetherness with my class. :)
I bet you can find some of your pupils in the images of these little ones.. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_beS2SauHE&feature=related

Dear singerina,
Thank you for your post. You seem like a wonderful person from the way you describe your relationship with your students. When I am your father's age , I would love to be greeted with a smile by one of my students. It must bring him joy and satisfaction to know that he touched the heart of students.
Nahla
Thank you for your nice words Nahla. I too wish to live my father´s age and such situations! :)
I try to be kind and "useful" to my students, but I believe they sometimes do regard me as the Evil Queen as well :)))
It's nice to be Snow White. We all need more fairy-tale in our life

Teenagers are a tough group! I must think about it... :))
Hello Singerina, I loved the anologies you suggested and I asked to myself; How do I feel?
Like Alice who suddenly gets short to pass through doors and who suddenly grows tall to fulfil a mission; constantly changing and adapting to the circumstances :)
Cheers.
