      phonetics teaching in india

I've observed with my own experience that if phonetics are taught nicely at an early stage the child faces less problems while writing spellings. My 7 yr old daughter invents her own spellings and they sound  phonetically right. like for example I use my dictionary quite often so I decided to cover it . When I returned to pick my dictionary I saw on it written with sketch pen DISHNARY OF ENGLISH. It was my daughter's work. I was very pleased to see her effort.

A child may not know the grammatically correct form of a word but if he is trying to percieve the word with his own mental ability, I think it should be encouraged and appreciated gradually the child should be exposed to the correct spelling form. But sadly, In India, I have noticed Teachers are not teaching phonetics properly in many schools rather they fill the child's copy with red marks. This inturn causes adverse effect on child's confidence. The teachers are so hellbent on the correct form of spelling that they fail to develop the cognitive skills in children as a result the child simply aquires the skill of cramming! I think teachers should be trained in this regard to pay more emphasis on the phonetics and pronunciations for the better aquisition of a language.

I agree wholeheartedly with your points both on the positives of the use of phonics in teaching reading, and also the lack of their use in India.  Unfortunately, since moving on from India to Thailand, I have found the same to be true here too. At the beginning of the next school year here, beginning in May, we are introducing a phonics course to run alongside our speaking and listening programme.  I do wonder what the reaction of both the homeroom teachers and parents of the Kindergarten students involved will be. I'm hoping that the fact this style of language learning is so alien here won't lead to parents deciding the course is worthless before giving us a chance to prove otherwise.  hmmmmm.

I think it's a good idea to run a parallel course with listening and speaking. I agree parents have to coperate too. We in India are facing the same challenges. Read my blog on 'parents please slow down'. Teaching english in a practical way is something that the parents have to be educated with.

      Hi, Shailey

Although I come from a very different reality, I also deal with some problems regarding spelling when dealing with my groups of 8 year-olds. Although I don't punish them for incorrect spelling, I try to make them notice their error and wait for their own grooming to see that in paper. But I truly believe that you don't have to necessarily 'teach' spelling, but yet provide plenty of opportunities for it to be noticed and for children to assimilate the correct form at their own pace. It's kind of what is proposed by peripheral learning and I have tried to put that in practice with some good results. Have you ever considered that?

yes , I agree with you. I guess we have to be patient enough and respect the child's cognitive style of learning. Exposing him to a lot of resources and practice has given some good results. Still as a teacher I feel we have to be really creative to capture these tiny-tots' Attention!

Phonics products are available in India. I have seen a very nice product that says "Ultimate Phonics, Read and learn english". This has few thousand of words sounded out, and also lot of senteces to practice. This comes with 26 books and a multimedia CD. This is an excellent product for phonics. I got this as a gift for my daughter from my close freind. She knows I was always worried about her spellings and pronunciation and losing marks in her studies. This is a great product for phonetics.
