      Social media in esl classrooms

      Hi again :)

Today, I'm going to talk about social media and the power of social media in esl classrooms.

We are 21st teachers. Techonology has became part of our lifes. I think most of us spend a lot of time on facebook, twitter. We talk to our friends, students, relatives etc. What I mean is here that we cannot ignore using technology and social media,as well. But what about using social media in our classrooms ? What about having lessons via facebook, twitter ? Should we do it  or ignore it and continue with other methods ?

I think we totally MUST use facebook and twitter. HOW ? Very easy.

-If you have privacy problems, open an account that consists of only your students.

-A lot of students have facebook and twitter. They love spending time on those sites. First, explain that you are going to use facebook and twitter for educational purposes.

-Later, start talking over facebook and twitter. But give them real reason to do something with class. For example, an online chat about lesson that you had today, give them a homework and control them.

-Twitter is a good way to improve their writing skills. You can make them use twitter for chat.

-You can also make them update their status once a day. I had a lecture like that last semester. I loved it :)

-You can disscuss some issues over social media. It is easy and some shy students can express themselves more  on the internet. For exzample, you choose a topic with your students and disscuss them over facebook, twitter. It sounds good, doesn't it ?

      - You can talk to them about tomorrow's lesson. Or you can announce some news. Our instructior does the same. We talk to them over facebook as a whole class, it is easy and fun. :)

I want to finish my first part with a sentence that I love very much ( I read this in the newspaper) Smart teacher instead of smart technology!

Using technology is not enough on its own. Using facebook and twitter is GREAT because students love them, spend a lot of time on them, if you use what they love, they start to have an interest and your lessons will be much more fun and enjoyable.

You will start to see the power of social media day by day. Students will enjoy themselves while learning. At least, I have to say that I love spending time on social media and I love talking and doing something over social media for educational purposes.

I want to hear that do you use social media what kind of activities do you do with your students ?

      Happy blogging :))

      Dear Sevim,

Since I am a big fan of social media tools, I can easily say that we can use these tools as a part of language learning. On facebook, we can just create a group of our own students and make our students write via computer.

      We can have task-based activities;

Once, I tried storywriting through twitter , we just specified a certain # hashtag for our activity. I wrote the first sentence of the our story and whenever they find time to log in twitter, they needed to write one sentence by looking at the previous sentence written before. In the end, we had a great long story :)) The advantage is that; students feel themselves free and whenever they have free time and wish to do something for the activity, they log in. There is no need to force them to create something in a certain place (classroom) and within a certain period of time (during English lesson) :)

      Happy blogging :)

Socila media is important only for educational purposes. If you manage to keep your students in control to create warm and entertaining working conditions and atmosphere, monitoe them , it's great! Keep on doing it and have prolific results.

      Good luck!

Social media in teaching is a subject that really interests me - thank you for bringing it up! I actually use facebook with my students (grade8) but I don't accept students as "friends" because I think that is too risky for so many reasons (read this: http://theedublogger.com/2011/05/11/the-why-and-how-of-using-facebook-for-educators-no-need-to-be-friends-at-all/) For ideas on how to use Facebook effectively with students check out the "Facebook for Educators Guide" here: http://facebookforeducators.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Facebook-Edu-Guide.pdf And, if you want to have a look at my facebook page that I use with my kids look here: http://www.facebook.com/Grade8LanguageArts

Twitter is not popular among my students (perhaps they are too young?) and I don't like it either. I have an account and have attempted to be an active tweeter - but my experience is that it is a waste of time. In the near future I will commit "twittercide" like so many of my colleagues (here's the reasoning behind one: http://slife.dudeney.com/?p=715) That said, some teachers seem to like twitter a lot and they of course have their own reasons.

      :-)

Karin Hocam thanks for your comment :))

I know what you mean by saying that that is too risky for so many reasons. Is it a good way to open a new account for just students ?

Thanks for the links. They will give me great help !

      Happy blogging :)
