Have you ever written a letter to the future? If not, you should. Letter to the Future was an activity I applied in my classes when I was working for a high school. My students wrote letters to students, children, politicians, youth of the future. Some of them wrote letters to their future selves. I collected the letters and hopefully I will send their letters back by post in 2023.
When I started to teach at a primary school, I used the same activity. But, this time I asked sixth graders to write a postcard to fifth graders, who would replace them. Because, writing a detailed letter could be challenging for them. I asked seventh graders to write a letter to sixth graders. And, I asked eight graders to write letter to seventh graders. Before this activity, they should learn how to write a letter. It was an assignment and I expected them to write about their experiences in my classes and suggestions to their friends.
While I was writing this post, and as a connection to my previous post, I decided to start a project on Wikispace on this topic. I generated a new page on my Wikispace and prepared a poster on GlogsterEdu (by the way, you should take a look at GlogsterEdu, just discover it yourself) I invite all of you to join this project and hopefully I'll invite teachers from all over the world to join it. To learn how to join it, you just need to click The Letter to the Future Project and read the information on and below the poster.

It is a useful activity to improve the students' writing abilities and a good chance of connecting to the other via English. A similar activity could be done for higher education students and that could require them to be more serious. I hope other teachers will join your project!
Thank you Bülent!
I think I'll suggest to the 5th grade teachers at my school that they have the students write "future letters" to themselves! They could write about what they think/hope their lives will be like when they become 8th grade students. To them, there is an eternity of time between grade 5 and grade 8! I'm sure they will LOVE receiving those letters 3 years later! I can not think of a better and more fun way to start the "writing letters" section of our grade 8 curriculum!
Super idea!

Hi Osman,
When students write a letter to the future, their creativity develops. It's also nice to get letters from their friends. They learn about you and your class from their friends. I strongly recommend it.

Hi CoffeeAddict
I think your idea is also superb. It'll be really great to get letters when they are at the 8th grade. Thanks for the comment.
