Flat Stanley wants to be your guest!

Have you heard of Flat Stanley Project, before? If not, you’ll be happy to know. In this project, children prepare paper Flat Stanley characters. They  write their Flat Stanley’s  adventures in a journal and send their Flat Stanley characters and journals to  their friends in a different  city or country in an envelope. They treat  Flat Stanleys as guests and host them for a period of time. They also write Flat Stanley’s adventures to the journal and send back to their friends in an envelope.

A primary school teacher from Nouan le Fuzelier, France invited me and my students to take part in this project and I started my Flat Stanley Project with her and her students. We received our first Flat Stanleys in December and we’ve been hosting them in our flats for about two months. We’ve had really good time with our guests  and we’ll send them back soon.  We’ll also send postcards of our town. Because, it’s a part of the project.

I strongly advice my colleagues this project. It’s a big fun for children and they both have fun and learn to write in English. They always find something to write about their Flat Stanley characters.  Even if it looks like a pen-pal project, it isn’t same.  Students treat their characters as real guests and it improves kids’ creativity while writing.

You can carry out this project with more than two schools. Then, Flat Stanley will travel more and it’ll be more fun for kids  to write and read about their mutual friends. They can look at the world map to find where their Flat Stanley is and they develop their knowledge about the world.  If you would like to take part in this wonderful project, you should take a look at the official internet-site of the project.

This is a suitable project to improve creative writing. I'm happy to learn that you'll disseminate it.

I hadn't heard of Flat Stanley before but I have heard of similar ideas. On the simplest level, I know some teachers who have used a class teddy bear and sent it home with a different student every weekend who then writes a journal entry about what they did together. On a larger scale, I heard of a similar idea in which the teddy was sent from school to school around the world, each time having photos taken and writing them on a blog for the other classes to see. I'm sure kids would love to be involved in something like that!

      Hi David,

There may be different variations of this project. Teddy bear project is also a good idea. We're going to have a teddy bear project as you've told. It's in our activity plan of new Comenius Project. A head teacher from Wales (a friend of mine) suggested it. It's like a travelling gnome prank. Thanks for sharing this idea with other teachers.

      Hi Merve,

Flat Stanley Project or similar projects are educational variations of travelling gnome prank.

      Thanks,

      Bülent
