No teacher can say that he/she knows everything about English. English is such a huge subject that even if you have studied or you have taught it for a long time, again there will be some points which have never arisen before. Even Native teachers sometimes come across these points when they have classes with foreign students.
The question here is that” Should we be straightforward and tell them that we don’t know the answer” or “Should they be deceived?”
In my opinion the solution is clear- we must admit that we don’t know the answer. We must try to find the answer and let the students know in the next lesson. But we have to be careful about our knowledge of the English language because if the situation happens a lot and the teacher doesn’t know the answer, the students will lose their confidence in the teacher.
The worst thing a teacher can do is to give an explanation which later turns out to be untrue.
We are in the classroom to help our students, but when there is a situation we cannot, we’d better be honest with them and say “I don’t know.”
