Ok, so this week something entirely different. Last week my boss asked me if I wouldn't mind having a work experience girl come into class to see what goes on. There's a group of English girls visiting this week (they have this strange thing called 'half term' in England....) and they're coming into class to meet some Spanish students just like them and we often take advantage of this so they can have some real contact with the language. But there are a couple of girls who are older (well, 17) and are thinking about maybe becoming teachers in the future.
It takes me back to when I was at high school and did my work experience at my old Primary school. If I remember rightly, the teacher there got me to clean out her staff cupboard and a little bit of extra reading and maths with the children. It's definitely NOT what inspired me to become a teacher, but it didn't put me off either. And it was a lot better than some of the other jobs my peers were doing (one went to the cemetry to do a bit of digging!)
Anyway, on day 1 of this week-long experience, I couldn't believe how nervous I was! Not really the thought of having someone else in the room (I am one of the few teachers who genuinely doesn't mind, no, even likes the thrill of an observation) but more because I had no idea how it was going to work. In the end it was fine. The children responded well to her, although I felt quite bad about her having so little to do. We were in the Interactive Whiteboard room and the beauty of that is that the children really teach themselves.
Today (day 2) I made a concerted effort to get her to do more (well, she took the register a couple of times and wrote the homework on the board). I also got her to monitor what the children were doing and check homework. It seemed to go ok, but she was stiflling more than just one yawn by the end of the evening. I don't really know if she's happy doing what she's doing - her comment is 'oh they're so cute!' when really I'd like to hear 'wow aren't they good' but what can you expect? Don't get me wrong, she's very nice and really the best kind of visitor to the class who politely does everything I ask and sits quietly by when not doing much.
OK, I have quite a big headache now so I'm going to sign off. Thanks for reading!
