      "Who wins?" Facilitators vs. Dictators

I just want to share this lovely mini-story with you before you start reading my post. You can read it, http://home.bresnan.net/~cabreras/theboy.htm

How many little boys like in the story do you have in your classroom? If your answer is ‘not so many’ then I would be really happy to hear from you about your teaching style.

Language classes are the ones that are mostly based on production. Our students need to use English in the classroom. As a teacher, if you keep telling them what to do all the time, then your students learn waiting for the teacher to start their actions likewise the little boy did in the story. In the end, students’ creativities are dying year by year and finally we have language learner stereotypes who resembles one another.

I hold the opinion that we should be ‘facilitators’ as language teachers rather than being ‘dictators’. In facilitators’ classes, students feel themselves relaxed to produce any kind of language output, to share their ideas and most importantly learn more.

Does that sound more student-centered and desirable? I can hear that you are saying ‘Yes’.

Which one are you in your teaching? ‘Facilitator or Dictator’ All in all Who wins in language classroom? The first group or the second???

I am looking forward to hearing your ideas,

      Happy weekend everyone,
