Let's go to night club tonight....

If you are reading my post now, that means that you are expecting to see an official invitation to go to night club , I am sorry but this was only to catch your interest :) Thanks in advance for staying with me till the end of this blog post.

We can have extra activities at school with our students and they can be related to combining their free time activities and learning English. Therefore; I am in favor of ‘clubs’ at school.

Speaking club might be good for the improvement of speaking skills. You can bring really catchy subjects suitable for your age group and then with some interesting activities, you can help your shy learners to become speaking-freaks.

Drama club is another useful way to learn more vocabulary via original plays and they will be interested in learning more about literature. We can at least create positive attitude towards fine arts.

Reading club is for reading short stories and books in English. The members of this club can exchange the books after they finish and later they can also have discussion in English about the plot, character and ending of the stories.

What else do you want to add? I think, the members will be there voluntarily and each activity will be really motivative for learning English more. If you have more ideas about this topic, I would love to hear them all..

      Happy blogging everyone ….

I have 2 additional classes a week and now I'm devoting them to translation English classic into Russian (it is not the mother tongue for one of my students). It is not a dictionary translation, but mostly it is literary. Lot's of skills are developed in this activity. Students need to find new words quickly in the dictionary, to make all necessary transformations, find synonyms and other grammar constructions in the Russian language to make sentences appropriate. So, I can say the literary translation develops skills in English and in Russian.

I also dream about organization of Business Club in my school. I mean, some meetings when students pretend to be employees of some company with a director, top managers and other positions among them. Each meeting of this club will be devoted to a new situation (share of responsibilities, budget development, creation of ads of the company, a search for a new employee etc.). I think it would help people to learn some business English, to prepare themselves to use English in everyday life and at work, and also it would be funny and interesting for them to live once a week a new life and to try a new role.

Games in English! -  You could use board games, card games, any games in English, and focus on the present progressive phrases such as, "I am using a...", "I am taking....", "I am moving ____ spaces", "I am giving you....", "My turn", "your turn", etc.

These phrases repeat themselves in any/all games.  Kids don't even realize they are learning English, because you as the teacher explain to them that it's simply part of the rules...they MUST say what they are doing in English!

      Geography in English!

For a geography class, the teacher need only prepare a short slide show with repeating topics:

      Country:

      Where is it?

      Flag:

      Language:

      Hello in their language:

      Goodbye in their language:

      Animals from that country:

      Famous Places in that Country:

Three popular foods from that country:

      Current event from that country:

Every week, the teacher would prepare a short presentation about a new country in the world.  If he/she is really intersted in getting the kids hooked, provide a snack at the end of the lesson, and teach the children how to say that food in the local langauge of the place you're studying about.

Such great ideas Oztrkozge!  You're an inspiration!

I’d like to add one more club to you. What about Walking club? We have a lot of foreign students and students from other cities and town and they are willing to find out more about the city they are in now. So, why don’t have a walk round the city and tell them a bit about it in English?

      Good luck,

      Nastya

Yes , Victoria that sounds great, we can choose the films according to students' taste and as follow-up activities, we can have mini discussion about the film, combination of listening+speaking :)

      Thanks for your idea,

That'S another good idea, liked it. Translation is another problematic issue for learners, with the idea of Translators Club, they can improve their grammar, vocabulary skills as well as their metacognitive skills.Plus, they will learn more about English classics which is really good for cultural acquisition. It will affect their language use in a positive way. How many hours do you have for this Mary? Does 2 additional classes mean 2 hours a week with them? do you wish it was more?

      Thanks for your contribution...

      Happy blogging..
