Story telling is a great activity to get children get hooked to reading books. Moreover, reading aloud will help them pronounce the words clearly and then when they get tied up with reading, they would read silently to get the whole meaning of the story. Some even asked me to translate the meanings of the words in their mother tongue without getting hold of a dictionary because they feel that it is a bit slower to do so as to enjoy the real story real fast.I encouraged them to use the dictionary though I can help them translate the whole story, but they have to make their own effort to learn these new words or vocabulary through their own findings.
I really love to get responses from the primary school children when I read them a story. While reading out the story I would act out with gestures to show them and make them understand the whole story. With action and voice intonation, they really enjoyed the drama, what more, they could understand the expresssions shown through the use of the words showing feelings, anger, depression, excited or surprised.I think that I should have more models or suitable story books to suit the children's familiar background such as a scene in the zoo,at the shop.clinic or market. There must be a funny scene too(with colourful illustrated pictures),a great example is the Magic Box reading collections.I adapt some of the stories to suit the level of my students.I copied the pictures and write my own words to tell the story of the illustrated pictures. It would be nice to read to them then they read aloud together with me,expressing the words like I do.It is really fun and enjoyable when you see those smiling faces of enjoyment and understanding.
After the reading is being done,I would let them act out their part(I chose them the characters they would be,if not they would be arguing on which character they like to be) or imaginary scripts that they have memorised from the story and act out the drama with their facial expressions and words used.
To get the children hooked in reading for enjoyment or understanding, the teacher has to sacrifice a lot of time and passion with a great discipline. Some creativity is needed not just to rely on books sold in the market or famous literature books at this age(7-9) of the primary school level.
The teacher has to create the unique BIG books on materials based on the childrens' life and environmental experiences which they can relate and enjoy to the fullest with the prime objective achieved to get them hooked on reading and carry on this habit forward, later they will enjoy other Literature books for example Tom Sawyer,or even adventure story books by Enid Blyton.
