Change I feel is the only truth & that is what has taken place in language teaching.I am basically talking of Indian classrooms and the kind of curriculum followed. Although not only literature is taught but importance is given to language also, but when it comes to improving spoken skills in English I feel not much is achieved.
I request all my readers to help me in knowing how to improve spoken skills in classrooms with adult learners.
They can be very adamant of not opening there mouth or else they could end up being nervous. How to get rid of this fear of speaking English & believe me learners here are always afraid of speaking grammatically wrong English, may be that is one of the major reasons why learners shy away from speaking the language. The second major reason is the attitude of teachers ( always finding faults).I am not saying all but majority of them.
I feel one thing can alter these kind of attitude towards learners is teacher training programmes all over the country, so that one new perspective can be viewed by teachers, rather than only thinking in terms of right or wrong - as it is only about being acceptable or unacceptable in language. There is nothing as right or wrong!!

I am also an english lecturer i also face this problem, but i think that we dont provide our students proper chances to speak, now i use these things
1. i tell them the summary of the topic in hindi in short then i discuss it in english then i choose words from my summary and write down them on blackboard now ask my students to write in their own words. After that i provide them chances to read their writing, then ask short answer type questions they reply me. In the beginning they commit mistakes but i avoid them because it mars their efforts.
2. I make pictures on blackbord like scenery and also write english words in the pictures and then ask my student to make sentences by using the words i have already provided them. They speak small sentences.
