      Thinking Skill: Making Connections: Text application.

      'The Enemy' by Pearl S Buck.

      This short story is difficult to follow without making connections.

      The beginning contains flashbacks that provide pertinent information for the understanding of the plot.

      At one point, the General speaks to Sadao but there is no introduction to thechange of setting.  Pupils must make the connection that Sadao has told the General about the prisoner by what he is saying.

      I suggest you take a look and see if your pupils can follow.  If not, I suggest 'storyboarding'.

      Distinguishing different perspectives is also a must.
