The speaker is trying to decide which path to take (literally and metaphorically).  He is trying to work out the consequences of both taking one path and not taking the other.

Some pupils have difficulty envisioning decision making so making a mind map helped one of my pupils.  We drew events in her life that actually happened because she went to the school she goes to, and events that might have happened if her parents had chosen another school in the same area. (Differences were: different friends, worse grades, going to the army in the future instead of National Service, she might have got a boyfriend, she might have had a different hairstyle (think sliding doors)).
