Literary Terms. Only a definition ?

Do you teach your students a literary term by giving a definition or activities? I taught my students the poem "Count That Day Lost",a poem that is required for their final grades in the 12th grade. This is the activity that I did to teach them the work rhyme:

      • Literary term: Rhyme
      • Definition:  used in poetry most often at the end of lines when the last syllables of the words at the ends of the lines share the same sound, homophony.

      a) Find the words that share the same ending sound:

man map mat lip log did

dog cat sip cap hot can

hid cot hat sit can lap

      b) Fill in the missing space with a word which rhymes with the previous sentence:

As I walk around I see

                     A great big apple ______

       C) Can you find the words that rhyme in the following poem?

A Note to the Moth Who Ate My Sweater
I hope that you are feeling better
now that you are full of sweater.
But, frankly, don't you think it's rude
to use my clothes as common food?
I'd rather share my bread and rolls
than deal with sweaters full of holes.
The next time you intend to dine
on sweaters that are clearly mine,
I must insist -- call you to task --
don't take a bite unless you ask.
By now, I think you surely know
the answer is a big, loud,
      NO!

      c) Find the rhyme in the poem "Count That Day Lost" by writing down the words that have a similar last syllable:

      1)       ___________________________________

      2)       ___________________________________

      3)       ___________________________________

      4)       ___________________________________

      5)       ___________________________________

      6)       ___________________________________

      7)       ___________________________________

and thank you for the inspiration. You made me realize that I neglected using poems for a looooong time. And aren't they beautiful and useful for learning?

      Dear Asligokturk,

I love teaching poetry. Yes they are very useful because you can teach the students so many things, so many words and ideas. Poems are great for all ages.
