Book Tasks
Submitted by nahla_shaw on 6 February, 2012 - 20:16
In every semester, I make sure to give my students the chance to present a topic in front of the class. I like the idea because it not only gives them self confidence, but helps them practice their English. I asked them to read a book and give a presentation about it. The presentation requires a summary on the story and an additional task which they must present to the class. Here are some ideas:
- Draw a series of pictures illustrating the story you have read.
- Write a letter to one of the characters.
- Hold an interview with one of the characters asking questions about events in the book. It may be recorded.
- Draw a map showing where the story takes place; describe what happens in each spot.
- Write a song or poem about the book.
- Have a mock trial defending your opinion of the book.
- Design a new jacket for your book.
- Write a letter to the author, asking questions about how, why and where the book was written.
- Write a diary for one of the characters.
- Do a summary of the story in comic strip form.
- Write an advertisement (for TV, radio, newspaper) trying to sell the book.
- Compare and/or contrast to another book you have read: plot, characters, theme, style, etc.
- Write a continuation of the story.
- Write or record a dialogue between two or more characters.
- Make up a different ending or beginning.
- Rewrite the story in a different genre - a newspaper article, for example.
- Describe one or two of the characters you liked best, you liked least, you would like to be, you would like to add to the book.
- Make a diorama. A diorama is a scenic representation in which figures and lifelike details are exhibited in a shoe box.

Here are three more suggestions I use in my class:
19. You have decided to turn the novel into a daily TV drama.
a. Write down a synopsis of the first episodes.
b. What would part of the novel would you change and why?
20.
You are having dinner with one of the minor characters at your local restaurant. Write the dialogue between yourself and the character, focus on:
a. things you and the character share.
b. things that are different between you and the character.
c. The difference between 2012 and the time of the novel.
21. Write a blog of one of the characters you have read about.
Good Luck
