Some problems of applying 'up to date teaching method 'in my school

Hello,

Hello, I'm a newcomer. I'm a teacher of a senior high school in Bandung, Indonesia. I'd like to share my teaching experience with  teachers especially with those from developing countries. Besides, I'd like to practice writing or communicating with all teacher all over the world.

Since my first year of being a teacher. I've always tried to apply any methods of teaching according to the condition of my students. I teach students of mixed ability, around 30 students in a class, with various family backgrounds.

Teaching using multimedia or on line is considered up to date today. I personally agree with this and I actually enjoy it. However, after several times teaching using multimedia I start to become a bit frustrated. Not because my students do not enjoy it, but it's rather on the facilities of my school that has only 1 computer lab that accommodate 30 students, and the time table arrangement of national curriculum with 16 subjects that we adopt. Can you imagine how hard to arrange the time table when most teachers want to take their class to the computer lab since they also want to vary their teaching and learning activities, too. That's only one problem.

Another one is the students themselves seem not ready yet with it. Not because they have no computer literacy, but they aren't used to learning is such a way. It's been too long that the students use text books or ready-printed material. Even the e-books  that the government has provided haven't been in great advantages because our society haven't been used to such the media. Consequently, learning on line or through multi media is considered just like an intermezzo or something fun  for them. It doesn't touch the essence nor the importance of the  teaching material. In addition, internet or computer is still an expensive thing in our society.

There's hotspot area in my school, but the problem is that not all teachers have or get their notebooks with them. I wish a had a notebook of my own so I can join this forum anytime I have free time, no need to be in line waiting for others using computers in the office. But I'm quite optimistic that my society, and of course my students, will someday be ready for this change. Maybe I just have to be patient. Looking forward to hear your opinions and sharing. Thanks.

You are exactly right! BE PATIENT. Even in my school district where teachers have much more access to technology than you do they don't really use it in a transformative way. My ESL tudents resist trying something new because their teachers assign them the old tried and true methods and they don't want to be "different" from everyone else. We just need to keep trying new things and teaching ourselves better ways to teach. You are just starting your career and you have many years to grow in your use of technology. Your school will catch up with you eventually! Keep up the good work. Many of us have the same problems so you are not alone.

Thanks a lot for your response. I really appriciate it. It's a motivation for me. If you don't mind I'd like to know briefly  where you are teaching and how's your school like. I'd like to make some improvements at school, and your description will be a great advantage for me.

We are in the same situation, you see. I'm a teacher of English in a remote area. My school only has 1 computer lab and I only  have a few times to use this room. Furthermore, it seems to be hard to manage my students when I teach them in this room. They are so noisy and I feel exhausted to make them silent.

I just graduated from University 1 year ago. Now I try my best to further my study. However, teaching takes me a lot of time. My first step is taking the IBT toefl test successfully.

I understand your situation and I hope we can overcome this objective difficulty in some days

I've been working at a primary private school for six years, and believe it or not we'll be using multimedia in the classroom starting next schoolyear while public schools around have been using it for years!  I'm really excited about it because I also believe in this modern days students need to use technology to improve their learning and of course we teachers should be at the head of it.  Receive my greetings from Mexico.
