      BritLit Russia: Main Conception.

Hello, my dear colleagues! Today I’d like to tell you about BritLit project – one of the important events in the schedule of British Council. Actually I was lucky to participate in the work of its sessions in Moscow from the 29th of November to the 1st of December, 2011. This really was a great event for me and I’m grateful to British Council Russia for such a great opportunity of professional self-development.

So what is BritLit project? You can easily google it and find the information but even when I first got acquainted with it its role wasn’t clear to me at first (but still http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/try/resources/britlit is worth reading for sure). The idea of the project belongs to Fitch OConnell who worked in Portugal in 2004. So let's thank him for it once again)

In fact BritLit is an attempt of teaching society to arouse students’ interest in reading and exploring our world through literature. This refers both to school and university level. How could that be done? Well, the organizers of the project believe it will be possible if teachers use modern short stories created by living authors. Thus, there will be the complete interaction between writers, teachers and students. I think this really is a great idea)

Hello, thanks for giving information about BritLit. I think that any opportunity for extensive reading is great (doing this via short stories/literary work is even better).

I have a question; Have the students been able to communicate the content of the project (outcome, whatever they produced- summarise, reactions, posters...etc.) to the actual writers?

      You are welcome)

Well. a good question really... I used only teaching resources and their reaction: most of our colleagues believe it's really getting better. So, perhaps it's up to us to see their reaction & feedback. That's what I'm going to do. Besides, continuing talking about this session of course.

      Hi Mike,

that sounds a really nice project since it would be great fun exploring the world through literature. Both of them (world knowledge&literature) are crucial elements in language learning adventure. You must be really lucky to be a part of it. Enjoy and make the most of it :)

      Cheers,
