In this short article I’m going to explore the advantages of using icebreakers in the classroom.
Key words: icebreakers, motivation, creativity, link
ICEBREAKERS: IMPORTANT TOOL OR A WASTE OF TIME?
EXPERIENCING ICEBREAKERS
After many years working as a teacher, I got to the conclusion that icebreakers are a powerful resource to arouse our students’ interest in taking part of the class or, even coming to classes.
I liked to use them mostly with my groups that started classes after lunch because at this time in Brazil, people feel a little sleepy. So, the icebreakers helped me make my students more attentive and more interest in what all this stuff was about. Besides, I think it’s funny to start our classes (of course, when we have plenty of time to do it) with a game, a song or any other activity that can make our students practice English in a very comfortable atmosphere and, sometimes without realizing that the class has already started.
CHOOSING AN ICEBREAKER AND CREATING MOTIVATION
It’s a good idea to use icebreakers that can be connected to the topics that must be taught in that class, so there’ll be a link between the icebreaker and the "real" class. In this way the class will be motivating, pleasant, interesting and funny for both teacher and students.
As Paulo Freire, a very famous Brazilian educator, said: "Nobody motivates no one, but nobody gets motivated by himself." I can add that we can use the icebreakers to create motivation around the class and the group can get motivated as a whole.
CONCLUSION
So, I do really believe that when we are planning our classes we have to use our creativity to make room for some amusing activities that will help us use our time in class more effectively instead of wasting our time or, even worse, our students’ time.
Have you ever thought about that? Let me know your opinion!

Hello, Marciah! I'm totally agree with you on the the point that icebrekers make students get interested and motivated during the lesson. More than that they give students possibility to relax and have a rest from the lesson rutine.
I guess icebreakers should become a necessity on the lesson. I mostly use them at the beginning and in the middle of the class and the choice of form depends on the age of my pupils. For younger ones it is usually a game and with senior students we often discuss their teenage problems or fashion and music preferences. It makes us feel at ease and the atmosphere becomes more informal. For me it is essential.
This post was about icebreakers. its good you use them for getting attention of class as they add interactivity. Can you suggest any study that has been done about the effect of using icebrakers or we can say pre-class introduction? I need to know how much difference does it makes.
this is such a nice information,
but, I am still in lacking of kinds of icebreaking games.,,
I blindfold entire classrooms and you should too!:]
Kathy took the leap a few months back and, I must admit, it was powerful!
Once unmasked, students wrote about their experiences and even shared essays with the class! Classmates talked about their attempts to match the voice to the face, many felt they knew the classroom on a more personal level, and others felt they were more comfortable being themselves. One student who had particularly poor hearing through his whole life wrote about a drastic auditory improvement when his complete attention was focused on sound.
We are looking forward to working with Kathy and a number of other professors in South Florida and abroad in this coming semester! Our goal here at Pick Your New Opportunities is to bring sightless conversations to schools around the world, one classroom at a time.
If you or anyone you know is aware of a teacher who utilizes the power of ice breakers on the first day of class, we strongly encourage you to take a look at our website, its out of sight!:)
Thank you again Kathy for helping make this dream a reality!
Tenaciously!
