Hi, If you want to talk smt with your adults learners or with your Ss... I prefer you to a Town Hall Meeting ;) It is very enjoyable..Actually I have tried it in my class with 6th graders..Te result is not bad..but I enjoyed it in doing in USA in my training I was the member of the group ;)At first what is town hall meeting (real meaning) from Wikipedia:A town hall meeting is an American English term given to an informal public meeting. Everybody in a town community is invited to attend, not always to voice their opinions, but to hear the responses from public figures and (if applicable) elected officials about shared subjects of interest. Attendees rarely voted on an issue or proposed an alternative to a situation. So, with our Ss we choose the topic. It should be two groups..eachgroup discuss the topic eachother and each member of every group talk about the topic just 1or2 minutes. It should be one jury. So, they gonna talk about each groups positive and negative sides ;) In my class we talk about the new generations problem ''Obesity'' ;) Have fun!!!! P.S.:Groups could collect some data about the discussion ;)

Hi Leman, as far as I have understood this activity is a kind of debate in which participants can practice speaking skills. Thanks for sharing.
Hi, as you said, it is for practicing speaking skill and learning new words. Understanding the rules,,,Learn to be patient for waiting their turn and respect the others. Thanks for your positive and stopping by. :)
What about powwow? "tea meetings"? Ss would share ideas and experiences in a vary relaxed setting. There's no pressure to present formally.
Hi,It just depends on you... If you want to do it in a relaxing mood... you can call it Tea Meeting:)but ıf you want to make competition or smt like that you can call it town hall meeting :) Because Ss feel happy and concentrate when they focus on the topic formally,,,, It's just your pleasure you can discuss the topics how you want.. Enjoy it! Thanks for your feedback and stopping by ;)
Thank you a lot! It is an interesting approach, I'll definitely try! I want to share also my experience. In order to make my students talk, but at the same time to listen to others attentively, I practice group competitions.
1. I divide them into 2 groups trying ro prevent them from division in groups according to their preferences. Instead, I do it by myself to be confident each group has both strong students and those who are less talkative.
2. I give these groups two controversial tasks according to the topic we deal with. For example, the first group has to prove that it is better to travell in Russia, than to go abroad, while the other one has to prove people have to see other countries and travell outside Russia. Also I announce the winner team will get smth! (though students like being the winners itself)
3. Students have to discuss the pro- arguments in groups and make lists of their proofs (normally, it takes about 10-15 min)
4. Then we start a competition. A member of the first group has to name one argument for travelling IN Russia and explain the point (so it is a kind of short public presentation). The second group has to respond somehow: if they agree it is a good argument we count 1 point for the first group, if not- the first group has to prove their perspective, otherwise we cross this point out.
5. Then the second group names their argument with the same scheme. And we proceed with doing so till the end of their lists. Everytime a new member of group should present, it gives a nice initiative to talk for everybody.
I like this type of discussion, because it amazes students as it is a real competition. Moreover, students have to listen to others with attention in order to get a chance to contradict, disagree and finally win.
Kind regards,
katya
Hi, I like your way.. It's amazing!!!!!! Good activity for discussion.. ;) I gonna also try it! ;) I appriciate your way &activity... Great Post! Thanks for stopping by!
That's a really nice activity. Debates and discussions are great ways to practice speaking. Thanks a lot Miss Leman. :)
Hi Leman, I like all the activities mentioned here. Thank you. Here is another alternative:round table discussions. After finishing the topic/ story the students may come round a table. There can be 4/5 chairs and the students will be told to stay behind these chairs equally. One of them will be the judge, the others will be the characters of the story and one will be the member of your class. They can discuss the issue they have faced in the plot, and express themselves as being these people. After 2/3 minutes the teacher or the organiser will warn the students who are discussing to give their seats to the students behind them. At the end, the students acted as judges can come together and make a decision.
I think it is an enjoyable activity and it is great for speaking. I will use this once I start my teaching career.
Happy blogging :))
