The history and mystery of language
Submitted by jvl narasimha rao on 23 February, 2011 - 18:28
Language is God’s greatest gift to human
It’s not the property of a nation or man
You can’t posses it like land
Or keep it like a jewel on your hand
The pure languages like Latin and Sanskrit are dead
The resourceful ones like English and Spanish are spread
Every language has got many a dialect and accent
No dialect or accent can claim to be perfect
Politeness is the hall mark of any civilized language
Rudeness is intolerable for man in any age
Language is not the monopoly of a tribe
It only helps us to speak and scribe
Language helps us to know human history
How humans acquired language is a great mystery
It is a great binding force
And human beings’ wonderful resource

I see language as a tool, not as an aspect of personality. I don't think it's unreasonable to have a variety of accents to use to suit different situations; it does help you fit in, and it can facilitate communication. This being so, changing one's accent for specific purposes makes as much sense as changing one's clothing or carrying a different box of tools.
It is, however, rather difficult for most people to master multiple pronunciations, even of their native languages, and so perhaps for that reason it is uncommon to see people who adapt the accent to the situation. I think accents sound cool because it spices up the language.
