It has been announced this week that Cambridge University Press has acquired the 40 or so titles published by The Georgian Press. This is the third EFL list to be absorbed by larger publishers this year and is therefore another nail in the coffin of small EFL publisher. Summertown Publishing and Marshall Cavendish ELT were the other two publishers to be subsumed and, on this occasion, both went to Heinle.
It is essential that small EFL publishers should thrive because they are alwasys competing with the large marketing budgets of the big 4 publishers (Pearson, Oxford University Press, VCambridge University Press and Macmillan) and therefore need all the support they can receive.
