Hello again!!

Hello everybody!!

I had my English workshop again today and I thought that I would share with you, an activity that my students (and myself!!) really enjoyed! It was an activity that encouraged participation by the entire class and successfully all my students contributed to this activity! I hope that you get such a positive response from your classes as I did from mine this afternoon!

First of all I chose a student at random, asked him to come to the front of the class and i got him to to think of a celebrity or famous person. I asked him to keep it to himself. While he was thinking I asked the rest of the students to think of some questions, that result in a "yes" or "no" answer that they could ask the student at the front of the class, which would take them closer to finding out the identity of the chosen celeb!

After a few moments the questions started. They asked things like "Are you male?", "Do you play sports?"...etc etc... They asked the questions until one of them guessed the correct celebrity. The students then swap roles and another celebrity stands at the front of the class, ready to answer questions fired at them from their peers.

There are only a few important rules for the game - 1) All questions can only be answered by "yes" or "no" 2) Questions asked in a language other than english would not be answered. 3) When the student wants to ask a question they must put their hand up and wait for the "celebrity" to chose them. This is important because it passes the role of teacher/ring leader to the student, giving them a responsibility and experience in talking and controlling an audience.

I believe that this activity improved and strengthened the classes ability to form questions. There was a lot of repetition of question structures which is good for the memory. This game also got all members of the class contributing and communicating in a foreign language. Being able to stand up in front of a class of 20 people can be daunting but if you are having fun and talking to a group in a relaxed environment then it can be really good in improving self confidence.

I was really proud of the effort that they put into the activity and I recommend that you try it with your classes too!!

Let me know how you get on... and again ask if you'd like to know anything and I'l try and help!!

All the best!

Joezy
