'Ladies and Gentlemen please take your seats. The show is about to begin!'

So it's only Monday but seeing as today was meant to be spent at home and instead it was spent looking at this year's INSET programme, writing pacing schedules for new course books, going through book orders and trying to conjure up Teachers' books which still haven't arrived, trying to wade through the space that was formerly known as the Teachers' Room... well I won't go into the minor details but needless to say my day off was definitely a day on!

What I'm learning already this week as we're getting ready for the induction day on Wednesday, is that you need to have nerves of steel for the start of a new academic year. As a teacher the problems were always - will I have enough time to prepare all my lessons? Will I get stage fright getting up in front of all those new faces? How am I going to remember all their names? What are the new course books like? Have I forgotten how to teach? you know the usual questions you ask yourself after a long summer break! Well as a senior teacher I STILL have all these questions as I still have classes to teach. The only difference now is that I don't have anyone else to blame if I don't like the course books!

I have learnt so far this week that there's never a dull moment in the lead-up to the first day of school and that I LOVE being back stage.

      Dear colleague

What I like about our profession is we make a new beginning each year. Sure, sometimes it's too tiring but it's something which motivates us too. We just need to take a deep breath, open the door of the classroom and go in. From now on, we also have web 2.0 tools. Whenever we get bored of the coursebooks, we can find far better things to do. I believe we, the English teachers, are the most lucky ones. So Good luck!
