This is an activity you can do with A1 (CEFR) students to talk about their New Year´s resolutions.
The aim is to practise “going to”.
Write 2015 on the board. Then write the following as a list on the right hand side of the board and ask the students to copy it: travel more, work less, eat more fruit and vegetables, eat less hamburgers, do more exercise, learn a new hobby, ??? Ask students to repeat the words after you and see if there are any doubts with meanings.
Now write “I am going to” in front of the list and ask the students to copy it. Circle 3 of the verb phrases that apply to you. E.g. I am going to travel more, I am going to work less, I am going to learn a new hobby. Ask the students to repeat the sentences.
Now ask them to circle 3 verb phrases which they want to do in 2015. Ask them if there is anything else they want to do in 2015 and write the suggestions where the ??? are.
In pairs, student A says his/her 3 sentences to student B and vice versa. Now write on the board “He/She is going to” underneath where you wrote “I am going to” and ask the students to copy.
Ask one of the students for his notebook and read out his sentences. E.g. He/She is going to travel more, He/She is going to eat more fruit and vegetables, He/She is going to learn a new hobby. Now ask each student to pass their notebook to the person on their left. Ask the first student to read out their neighbour’s three sentences using “He/She is going to”. Then the second student and so on until everyone has read out his/her neighbour’s sentences.
