      When PowerPoint rules

Rule explanation is a common practice of our every day English teaching. Yesterday it was The Past Simple Tense, tomorrow it will be The Plurals of Nouns. Do we explain this important information effectively? Is the information presented in a clear and systemized way?

As a rule, this procedure is done in a particular traditional way when a teacher explains it in front of the blackboard, using chalk for some comments. Can this process be more interactive? It can be also done with the implementation of PowerPoint presentations with the interactive functions it has.

What are the positive sides of explaining rules with PowerPoint? 1) It grabs students` attention because the words move on the slide when the teacher explains the rule. 2) The necessary elements (endings or suffixes) can be highlighted in different colours. 3) The visualization of the material becomes systemized and is presented as a short “video clip”. 4) It shortens the time you waste for deleting words from the blackboard. 5) It is possible to come back to a necessary slide if students do not understand any details. 6) You can share presentation with the rule with students if it is necessary.

The use of PowerPoint can be a failure if it is done carelessly that is why it requires a good planning. But if it is done with enthusiasm and creative ideas it can help you a lot in the process of learning.

Irina, you just gave me an idea.

Maybe the BC can give us a place where we can put our power point presentations about grammar, reading, etc...   We could then make comments on each others' work. Moreover, we can share our best efforts and benefit from the work of our coleagues.
