Have you ever experienced the failure of pair work activity? I really had problems!
It is said that pair work activity is one of the most effective methods in English teaching because it stimulates the active work of students and involves every student in the process of learning. But there are always students who don’t work or keep silence.
As my experience shows it is important to support pair work of students. What do I mean? There are different reasons for the facts that students don`t do the tasks in pairs that is why it is significant to find different ways of making this activity more effective. When your students do some tasks together give them cards with keys in order they can check each other or in case if they both don`t know the answer. Organize the activity in such a way that it requires an exchange of partners after some periods of time and your students will keep attention during this session. Try match students with different levels of English and it helps students to support each other. Move from one pair to another and check the implementation and understanding of the task.
When we use widely spread methods such as pair work activities we should keep in mind that difficulties may arise in a very inconvenient moment. Plan how to support the work of students and the most effective method becomes even more effective and useful.

Hi Irina,
Think-pair-share also works well. After asking a question or questions, let them think individually then ask them share it with a partner. They can be partners by their own choices or you may tell the ones who are sitting side by side. Then after sharing, discussing, you tell them to share their ideas with another pair. The activity starts individualy them it becomes a group work.
