      Alternative evaluation

Evaluation is a powerful tool which helps us to motivate or demotivate students. On the one hand, it is said that tests and examinations are very stressful for students. On the other hand, tests and examinations are very useful because they show students` results and achievements. Can evaluation be less stressful but more positive for students?

As a supplementary method for traditional tests and exams I often use self-evaluation technique. Students have an opportunity to check themselves with the help of answers. I ask them to put a plus (+) if their answers are correct in order to visualize the results. This method requires half a minute but has a very positive potential:

      •  Students show their real level of knowledge because they don`t depend on the grade.
      •  Students aren`t afraid of not good grades.
      • Students understand what aspects they should improve before the final test.

This simple technique helps students to regulate the process of learning, they begin to realize that evaluation can be positive because it shows the weaknesses of knowledge. Self-assessment becomes an incentive to improve skills in this context.

      Thanks for sharing!
I use similar technique with the only difference that I recommend my students some reliable internet sources or software where they can do the tests on-line and the system will check them automatically pointing out their weak points. It's done in comfortable home environment with no stress or control.Probably one can find lack of control a drawback but as far as I can judge by my students' results and opinions it's not so.

I also like the self-evaluation technique, Irina!

And it's great when there are some tables of auto-evaluation after each unit in an authentic textbook. They really help.

Do you think that at lower level self-evaluation techniques are also possible? If so, can they be carried out in mother tongue?

I know that all the course books I like have the keys and I'm using self-evaluation technique in order to avoid cheating. I encourage my students to do their homework and then check the answers and if they don't understand why the keys give a different answer, we discuss it ))
