      Twitter 4 Education

      Hi,

I am becoming a big fan of twitter with its simple interface and huge potentials. I started testing it a year ago, but didn't actually start using it until recently. As an outcome, I felt there is a need for brainstorming ideas and further thinking of ways to effectively use it for both teaching and learning. With the 140 characters limit of twitter or similar platforms, there is still a lot we can do and share.

If you are interested in joining this tweeting for education initiative or the twitter page itself, check these two new websites.

Hi Ismail I'm a keen 'Tweeter' myself, though I use this mainly for self development and to share links etc. rather than with students. I actually prefer a similar product though called Plurk as i think it has a much nicer interface and you can scroll horizontally. I also like the way it allows you to embed video and images into your messages, so I have ended up using both. You can compare the two if you like by going to: http://twitter.com/NikPeachey and then comparing with http://www.plurk.com/NikPeachey You'll see the content is the same. There is another similar product called http://www.edmodo.com/ which was specifically developed for education and is supposedly more secure for our students, though i haven't tried it yet. I've also dabbled in video microblogging with 12 Second TV. I think it has a lot of potential, but I just hate seeing myself on video. I wrote a bit about it here: http://nikpeachey.blogspot.com/2008/08/12-second-video-clips-for-efl-esl... I know that Twitter is the 'big thing' right now, but I think it's always good to look around at what else is available to do the same job.  Best Nik Peachey | Learning Technology Consultant, Writer, Trainer

      Hi Nik,

Many thanks for your thorough response and all your links.  I personally find linear posts more eye-friendly. May be that is why I am interested more in twitter. I also tried edmodo, but honestly was not sure how to use it as it is not straight forward like twitter! 12 Seconds TV is also a great idea for micro-blogging by teachers or students. I think it worth a try, too.

The good thing about  all these new technologies is that they all serve each other in a way or the other. For examples, many new applications and websites now support twitter , like twitpic or shorttext.com,in order to enrich this simple technology. For that reason, I feel there is an urging need to explore all these possibilities and be creative in thinking about ways to implement them in our teaching and learning.

Please keep us posted with your findings in this new world of m-c. :)

Thank you Ismael, it's great really to have a taste of twitter in education. I started a twitter account for my consulting company in Argentina and I haven't really found any pleasure in it, I'm afraid.

I don't think a lot of people really understand what value twitter adds to our daily communication. Your ning page has made it clearer for me.

If you have more ideas to share about twitter, they'll be most welcomed!

      Cheers!
