Hi
I only registered on this site last week I should of done it a longtime ago. I have been teaching in China for nearly two years.
Last week I became the head teacher at Oral English College. This is a big challenge for me as I hate dealing with Chinese bureaucracy. So my first week was very tough, as I took over the job from a Chinese colleague, who to be honest was a useless head teacher, why? Well he had never been a teacher and he did not understand the students needs.
The main problem I have at the moment is that the school will accept as many students as possible, even if I don't have enough teachers. Also because it's summer holidays they will accept children. I don't really want a twelve year old sitting next to a 35 year old chinese business man. At the end of the day the management's only concern is money and my concern is the quality of study.
When I first came to this school last year they had no books and no rules for the students. We now have books for every level and a English only policy. It takes a long time to change thing in Chinese schools. It has to be done slowly so the management don't notice. Its difficult for a foreigner to change anything, but I have established a good team of foreign teachers who are helping me to change the school.
So I will try to keep this blog updated with my trials and tribulations
Thanks
Ian
