There was a popular rhythmic poem we loved to quote when we were in university.
The more we study, the more we understand
The more we understand, the more we learn
The more we learn, the more we know
The more we know, the more we forget
So, why study?
Of course, it was just an excuse for us for not to study hard.
I am now making English-teaching plans for a student. Somehow I feel like the poem is actually describing the learning process. We can never say that we know something unless we had learned it. Also, a lack of understanding, which you acquire from your study, we couldn't learn things. And I realize that teaching is a no-way-back journey, you just have to keep learning and learning. Therefore, the question posed by the author can have an answer: in order not to forget, you need to keep on studying. How exciting!!

Hi Hashimotoraru -
I completely agree with your conclusion. In my case, I am pursuing a lifetime's apprenticeship to learn French ... I know if I stop trying to learn, I will lose everything I have learnt so far! (But I enjoy it so much - the process of learning brings so many rewards, not just more French language skills.)
Best wishes -
