I am an English Faculty at an American University in the United Arab Emirates. I teach English to Adult college-age, Arab students and nationals of the country. The country celebrates its 38th Anniversary this year and had announced 2008 as the year for "National Idendity". And although it is an Arab Muslim country, yet expatriates constitute the majority of the population thus English is dominant. I will be sharing my experience and personal observations here on how the students are accepting or not, learnign English with its accompanying Western Culture and whether some of them feel that their motivation is inhibited or enhanced by the Western Culture which may be threatening their Arabic Culture and Identiy.
