Every class begins with some basic introductions, right?
I'm 21, from the UK (born in England, raised in Scotland) and right now I'm half-way through a degree in German & Spanish. At the moment, I'm doing a placement year in the north of Spain, where I'm studying and also working part-time as a language assistant in a high school.
My English-teaching experience so far has included a gap year in Thailand, where I taught classes of around 40 kids, aged between 12 and 16. I was there in a conversational role, I think. There to help the kids with their confidence and for them to get some practice with and exposure to "real" English. I was only 18 and unqualified, so nothing too serious.
I decided on coming back to the UK that I would never, ever become a teacher. Something that greatly pleased my Granny, a former headteacher, who has one more than one occasion warned me that I'd be disowned, should I decide to go stragiht from uni into a teaching job. But not all that long afterwards, I remember that I did enjoy it and I got the opportunity to go an a TEFL course in the city where I go to uni. I did the Intensive Weekend course and just now, I'm waiting to hear whether I'm to be awarded a grant (skint student!) to complete the 100-hour course from home.
I've recently been asked to start up a class for adult beginners, to run once per week with a syllabus designed by your truly. Not too sure what to do there to be honest, but I'm online for a few hours per day, making my eyes square in the quest for ideas and inspiration. (Feel free to chuck some my way!)
I do enjoy teaching English, but right now -and I'm being completely honest- it's mostly about the money. I've got a heavy workload at uni and will do for another 2 years after my placement year, and I'm looking to work at something other than a bar job and to make the same amount of cash for less hours... Hey, a girl's got to eat, right? I am enjoying the experience and hope to become qualified so that I can teach/ tutor when I get back to the UK to fund my horribly cliched beans-on-toast student lifestyle.
I like the challenge that teaching English poses, spreading and defending the language I get so much life and enjoyment out of. For this reason, I want to make every single one of my lessons the most it can be - the most fun, the most effective, everything. I've joined this community to share ideas - while my contribution might be a bit modest to start off with, I hope to be able to pass on my own tips eventually - and if not, I promise to share those experiences that'll give you a laugh...
