      Teach to present

Ten things your students should know about presentations

We ask our students to prepare projects, small talks by researching certain subjects. They prepare a powerpoint presentation quickly without paying much importance and read the slides to the class. While they are doing it, except the teacher nobody listens to them and they know it so they just do it because they are asked to do it.

However If a teacher believes these presentations are very important and they should become a life skill then the teacher should guide the students how to do it.

      Teach how to present projects

Be a guide. Prepare a presentation on how to present projects, small talks, etc and present it to your students.

      1.       Research the topic very well.

      2.       Prepare your slides (power point, if you like)

      3.       Add images to your slides

      4.       Instead of long paragraphs, use only key words

      5.       Speak clearly, don’t read

      6.       Maintain eye contact

      7.       Don’t stand in one place, move around.

      8.       Smile

      9.       Add references at the end of your presentation.

      10.   Give credit to the images used in the presentation.

Tell them plagiarism shouldn’t be encouraged.

Once a year I am involved in an interdisciplinary project (Science and English) on genetic modification. (Genetics is on the grade 8 science curriculum). The English part of the project involves the students in groups of 3 presenting their findings to the class aided by a power point presentation that they have created. To make sure that the students pay attention to their classmates' presentations, each group has to fill in an evaluation form for each of the groups they watch. I grade the evaluation forms as part of the overall project grade. This solves the "no-interest" problem.

      Happy Valentine's Day!

      Hi Eva,

I like projects and when I ask kids to prepare presentations, I usually guide them how to prepare a good one. So, I'll use these great tips.

      Thanks,

      Bülent
