      Digital storytelling

When we tell or write our stories, we focus on the characters, topic, setting, etc. In our lessons, we tell our own stories, we read other people’s stories, our students’ tell their stories and we are all surrounded with real or imaginary stories.

Last year I came across with the term ‘digital storytelling’ at Ozge Karaoglu’s seminar and then listened to Shelly Terrell and read many tweets and blog posts dedicated to digital storytelling. When I examined it, I found out that digital storytelling is the same thing with the traditional one. The only difference is you tell your story using computer based tools.

What will you need for digital stories?

      1.       You need to decide your

      • Characters
      • Setting
      • Time
      • Problem
      • Ending

      2.       You need to choose your tools

      a)      A digital camera

      b)      Papers and pens

      c)       Movie-player or any web 2.0 tools. Your students can draw pictures and write the story. Then they can take the pictures of the drawings and create their stories using media-player or the web 2.0 tools.

      d)      They can upload pictures or add music if they want.

For examples, useful tips and tools visit Shelly Terrell’s DigitalStorytelling and Özge’s blog

      Hi Eva,

I like the idea of combining text, images, and even more when a student is narrating it in their own voice.

It does make for a very nice, portfolio item, doesn't it?

Did you read my blog "Amazing Animoto"? I posted it yesterday I think. It is an example of digital storytelling using an excellent web 2 tool called animoto. Check it out!

Interesting indeed! We will have digital version of almost any practices in real classroom settings soon :-)

Thanks for the post. I didn't know this term

      Hi friends,

      Thanks for the comments.

@Osman, yes you are right and see how we are also becoming digital. I was very technophobic before Özge's seminar and look what happened to me:)

@CoffeeAddict, yes animoto is an excellent digital storytelling tool and read your post and watched the animoto and loved it very much.
