      Accent

In terms of accent I think there are some accents well known and approved by majority people like Oxford Accent and Midwest Accent but still accent is a part of identity so I think people should respect to different accents on condition that it is clear and understandable enough. Language is a crucial medium to be socialized and integrated into the society. The students who are stigmatized should be guided and integrated to the society. The human beings are created perfectly I strongly believe that each of us has great learning potential. In this sense guiding students to learn the fundamentals of a language by teaching a Standard English and help them to be able to integrate to the society and on the other hand respecting his identity such as accent could be a good balance. Human beings are social creatures so it is natural that they learn lots of knowledge from each other. So as teachers we should bear in mind this and promote collaboration and cooperation. As teachers we should always keep in mind that language is something flexible in Turkish we say “There is no bone of tongue” so it is natural that there are varieties in language. I think as teachers we are responsible to teach the fundamentals of languages and respect the identities.

Accent is the distinctive manner of oral expression. This is the term used to describe the way people pronounce words. An Accent can be stated as a characteristic pronunciation, especially: One determined by the regional or social background of the speaker.

One determined by the phonetics of the speaker's native language carried over to his or her use of another language. A particular vocal quality that indicates some emotion or feeling: inflection, intonation, tone. Idioms: tone of voice. the emphasis placed upon a syllable in pronunciation. In linguistics, an accent is a manner of pronunciation peculiar to a particular individual, location, or nation. An accent may identify the locality in which its speakers reside (a geographical or regional accent), the socio-economic status of its speakers, their ethnicity, their caste or social class, their first language (when the language in which the accent is heard is not their native language), and so on.
