OR Jigsaw reading for sawing boring texts and making them bearable
You know that text nobody finds interesting, but it’s there and you can’t really skip it, ‘cause the syllabus doesn’t allow it? Every textbook has them. So here’s what you could do to them:
- Cut the text into parts.
- Prepare comprehension tasks for students, but so that they can be answered only if people who’ve read different parts work together.
- Divide the students into as many groups as there are parts. Tell them to remember as much as they can.
- Form new groups, so that the members together have covered the whole text.
- Give out envelopes containing three cards each with a different set of solutions to the tasks, but only one is the correct.
- Each card from the envelope has a word on it’s back. The words on the backs of the cards with the correct answers form a famous line connected to the topic of the lesson.
- As students find the correct card, they call out the word at the back of the card. Write the words on the board as they are read: In, See, Change, World, Be, To, The, The, Want, You.
- The students assemble the line: “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
I’ve been introduced to this complex idea by a colleague of mine called Anita. :) It’s tricky to understand, but the results can be fantastic.
Love to all,
Dora

Hi Dora,
I've tried to do this a couple of times but it just didn't work!
How do you motivate the pupils to get on with it? It doesn't work if some of them do it and some sit back and doze.

Hi Dora,
Enjoyed your post and thought it an activity that other teachers would like to use in their classrooms, so I've just posted a link to this on the TeachingEnglish facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TeachingEnglish.BritishCouncil/posts/2875757279... if you'd like to check there for comments.
Please feel free to post on the page whenever you have anything you'd like to share.
Best,
Ann
Hi :) Thanks.. Nice to read it.I have also tried it..It's enjoyale;)
Thank you Ann!!!! :))))))))) It's VERY nice to be appreciated!!!!!!!
These are some things to think about: The chunks of the text mustn't be too long and the text should be of the right level so that every one can participate. There needs to be an introduction into the activity so that their curiosity is awakened. Maybe there should be an award for the class, if they do the task well?
But yes, when I think of it closely, if the class is too multilevel (if the difference between the students is too great, this might be tricky to pull off).
Hi Dora,
Thanks for sharing. I really liked it.
Cheers

:-) Yes, we should do more of it!
Some students will like this and other will hate it. Bear that in mind when you do this in class ;-)
