Computer Aided Language Learning in Schools

Students seem to know more than their teachers in this age of Computers. Computers are a terror to many grown ups but mere toys to the younger ones. But this need not be the case. I have seen many senior teachers, with just a little bit of hands on experience excel in Computers to the amazement of younger genarations. When these wonder-machines are brought to the class room, students sit up and the teacher finds the atmosphere extremely conducive to teaching and learning process. In interactive pedagogy computers play a major role in enhancing the worth and value of the teachers.

In my classroom experience, I have found that Computer in a language teacher’s hand is a powerful tool. Resources like Thesaurus, Lexicons, Phrasals and Pronouncing Dictionaries are just a click away. PPTs play a major role in teaching Grammar and Literature. Both audio and video files can be embedded into ppts and presented with minimum effort. I use PowerPoint, flash movies, TV with Cambridge VCDs and audio tapes to teach my students not only language lessons but also literature like Macbeth, Poetry and Prose. Classes come alive with Slide shows while teaching Cloze tests, Memory retention tests and Substitution Table Drills are some of the tools one can use.

Computers are indispensable while teaching Writing Skills. It is fun to teach the concepts of Five-Sentence Paragraph Writing using ppts. Concepts like Topic Sentence, Supporting Sentence and Concluding Sentence are taught easily using ppts.

English4today.com and bbclearningenglish.com are some of the websites which give loads of free to download audio/visual files for teaching phonetics and grammar. Eslgold.com caters to the LSRW skills.

I strongly believe that computers are here to stay in the English classrooms.
