As a teacher of English for 8 years, I subconsciously call myself as expert in teaching. What makes it worst is the willingness to learn something new isn't really much owned. But an event of my teaching time has awaken me, it's like a slap on my face/body to tell that a mosquito is sucking my blood.
It happened when I was offered to teach my cousin's boss's children who are at the first grade of primay and kindergaten. The parents are worried to their children's pronunciation, thus they requested me to focus on phonics so they can read well. My mistake was when I misunderstood phonics into phonetics, well to tell the truth, I'm an English teacher who focuses more on the students aged more than their children and didn't realize that phonics is different than phonetics.
So off did I go to the house to teach them taking some of the phonetics chart, and started by teaching them sound by sound. The parents didn't notice this until the second day. Soon, when they noticed this, they also didn't say anything. So far, I thought it had been going well. Then on the third day, I came to meet the parents to talk about some books that we were going to use for the children, and that was the time when I was questioned and also told to teach phonics not phonetics, they even asked me to read one of the sound and I made mistake (since I hadn't learnt about it). So, I apologized to the parents and saying that I had misunderstood and taught them phonetics as before I had thought they were the same. Then, I was given chance to learn it until I'm ready. Huff, next time I'll make sure this embarrassing moment won't happen anymore.
