Since the day that the first English language teaching method to the speakers of other languages was created, many ways and techniques to teach English have been developed. Necessities of new ways of teaching have occurred according to age group, gender, culture, experience and background of learners all the time. But the necessity of unique thing hasn’t changed at all. That is motivation.
Motivation is something like a key of the car. Each car can go further after it is operated. Each car has its own way of operating and peculiar engine. But a driver must turn the key to make the car move away. Here, key is motivation and car is learner and the way is language learning process. What the teacher should do is to choose the right key and turn it correctly. In the following paragraphs, I will try to give a working way to motivate learners. Almost for sure, each learner requires a peculiar way for him/herself to be motivated. That is to say, for learner’s certain characteristics way of making them eager to learn and get information should be diversified. One of these characteristics is age group. Certain age groups have their own needs and interests. If a teacher wants to motivate them, this criterion should be kept into consideration.
One important way of motivating young learners is to use the tool of privilege. They really like to be privileged. My way to provide is that I have established a educational club in my state school called “Study English Club”. Members of this club have some opportunities. They are also appreciated by other teachers. They can have an extra English Practice Lesson which is done once a week and only members can participate. Furthermore, they have an appealing membership card to show that they are privileged. This application really works. The other students study harder to be able to get this membership.
To sum up, each learner group has its own characteristics to be motivated. While the need for being privileged can be the motive for young learners, for adults it may be the desire of a powerful CV.
