      Reading About Dickens.

Unsurprisingly for a writer who led such a busy and fascinating life, many books have been written about Charles Dickens over the years.

Have you read any of these books or any other information about the life that Dickens led ?

At the moment, as part of the celebrations of his 200th birthday there are a number of books that have been recently published.

The novelist Lynn Shepherd has written 'Tom All Alone's' and you can read more about it right here: http://www.lynn-shepherd.com/books/tom-all-alones-the-solitary-house/

The biographer Claire Tomalin has written a new biography entitled 'Charles Dickens: A Life' and you can read more about her work right here: http://literature.britishcouncil.org/claire-tomalin

The writer Lucinda Hawksley (who appears in our short films in the Heroes and Villains series) has recently had published her book 'Charles Dickens' and you can read more about that project here: http://www.lucindahawksley.com/

Robert Douglas-Fairhurst has recently had published his book 'Becoming Dickens' and you can read more about that title right here: http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674050037

If you're interested in reading about how the work of Charles Dickens has been adapted for film , then you can read more right here at the British Film Institute's website: http://www.screenonline.org.uk/film/id/473285/index.html

      Hi everyone

Yes, indeed: it's a great day for Dickens fans. Of course, being a Dickens fan isn't just for today.

Do any of you do your own creative writing ? Has Dickens inspired you at all ?

      Dear James,

After reading your post and checking the links, I was inspired to dedicate one of my blog post to Charles Dickens and it is something as a combination of blogosphere and Charles Dickens.

If you want to check, I would be happy to hear your comments.

      Hello there oztrkozge

Thanks so much for taking the time to post your recollections and good feelings towards the work of Charles Dickens.

It's really a memorable feeling when you connect with a writer and I think it's one that can stay with you throughout your life.

The quote that you start your recollection with is terrific and the memory of your mum giving you your first Dickens book to read is really very nice.

The first book by Dickens that I read was a gift from my dad.

      Thanks again!

      James

First of all I want to thank Literary department of British Council for running the Dickens 2012 project. This project is of special importance for me. This year is significant for me because it a bicentenary of my favourite writer - "a novelist for all seasons", "an inimitable humorist" Charles Dickens. Several years ago I started my postgraduate research work on "Peculiar features of Bildungsroman genre in Dickens' creative work" and I hope to finish it this remarkable year. I have read a lot of critical research books on Dickens' life and his creative works. Mostly I focus on his novels. I have good language skills of English and Russian and that's why I can read and understand all main resources on Dickens Victorian literature as well. I can say that he had a cross-cultural influence.Dickens influenced on such Russian writers as Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy and through these writers he influenced on our Uzbek writers as Gafur Gulyam and Oybek. There a lot of things that can be said about Dickens but not all of them can be included into this commentary.
