Dickens and Descriptive Language
Submitted by Dickens 2012 on 4 February, 2012 - 14:36
One of the great creative achievements of Dickens was the invention and vivid quality of his descriptive language.
It doesn't take too long, in any Dickens novel, to identify a memorable and imaginative description of a character's appearance , behaviour and way of speaking.
What do you think are some of the memorable examples of how Dickens describes a character ?
Can you think of how Dickens uses nouns and adjectives to communicate a clear picture of a character whether they are a hero, a villain, or someone who might be a part of the story for just a short moment ?
Looking forward to reading your thoughts on this!

We used to read and love Dickens' stories in our childhood
Dickens really had a very rich descriptive language. He successfully draw parallel lines comparing characters of his protagonists with the atmosphere that sorruonded them.Just remember the epizodes in the novel Dombey and Son, where Dickens detail after detail depicted Dombey's character and described his dark, cold and gloomy house. Dickens was a master of pshycological portraits.
