My name is David Wolf and I have been mostly teaching private English lessons in Sofia, Bulgaria for 8 years.
I prefer teaching privately to single students or very small groups (2-3) for two reasons. I can customize the lesson to the individual needs and level of the student(s) and I can interact directly with each student rather than trying to direct a crowd.
Of course, this means the cost per student is much higher than it would be if they were studying in a classroom, so I must be the very best teacher to each student that I can be. This can be very challenging, but I must be succeeding at it because no one will pay so much for low quality. And besides, my best form of advertising has been word-of-mouth, recomendations from current and previous students.
Business English is very popular in Bulgaria at this time as Bulgaria has joined the international marketplace and confidence in, and knowledge of business English can enhance one's career. In addition, I teach TOEFL and IELTS for emmigration purposes, as well as SAT for university admissions abroad.
My greatest challenge, and most rewarding experience has been teaching beginning English. Challenging because I don't speak Bulgarian very well, rewarding because I can see the advancement of the student lesson by lesson. I liken it to driving a car: At the beginning you can really feel the acceleration, from 0-20, as it pushes you back into the seat, but accelerating from 70-90 can hardly be felt.
