      Putting on a play: don'ts...

Years ago, right after having been hired at my present school, I was informed that I would have to “put on a play” in the second semester. My response to this was “sure, no problem”, even though I had no idea whatsoever how to do such a thing.

You see, everybody else seemed to be totally in control of everything and I didn’t want to ask too many questions because I was afraid they would think I was a total loser...

So, I started reading up on drama techniques, choreography and vocal dynamics. I also spent a considerable amount of time chewing on my nails and pulling my hair out...

At the end of the second term that first year, a Play was put on stage and it was – well, not a total failure.

However, there are are some things I wish I had known not to do that first year:

      1.   Wear a skirt during rehearsals: not a good idea, see point 2.

      2.   Explain stuff: no, you must demonstrate every move and every expression. Say “watch me do it and imitate”. That works.

      3.   Have the students improvise: no, you must have a very clear plan (picture) in your mind as to how you want each scene to look.

      4.   Underestimate the power of gestures and facial expressions: the more the better – they should accompany every single line

      5.   Forget about music and lighting: even simple lighting/music/sound effects make a big difference!

Almost every private school has productions in English, so this is useful information.

      Congratulations!

(Last year I watched a movie the name of it is ''Nativity''. If you have time, please watch it. It was a charming movie about a teacher who tries to put on a play.)
